Lithium-ion battery material significantly cut manufacturing costs of graphene?

Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Scotland have found a new way to mass-produce graphene films. In the manufacturing of graphene films, because the cost of the substrate has a direct impact on the final cost of graphene itself, the researchers borrowed the materials used to make lithium-ion batteries and allegedly drastically reduced the cost of the substrate to about only those materials previously used 1/100.

Graphene has long been described as "magical material," because it was first isolated from graphite in 2004. Graphene is about the thickness of a single atom, but it is more flexible, tougher and more efficient than steel in conducting thermal and electrical energy.

However, graphene has not yet been widely used in the industry, the main limitation lies in its production costs. Only by enabling affordable graphene production can a range of new technologies be introduced to the market, such as providing sensory feedback to amputee prostheses through synthetic skin.

In a paper published in the latest issue of the Scientific Reports, the researchers described the process. Graphene is typically produced using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process in which gaseous reactants are deposited on a substrate to form a thin film during such semiconductor-like manufacturing.

In the past, copper was used as a material in production, but surface scratches and defects caused by the rolling process were observed under a microscope. Therefore, the researchers changed to commercial copper foil - by Mitsui Mining & Smelting company produced ultra-smooth copper foil for lithium-ion battery cathode. This ultra-smooth copper surface provides an excellent platform for the formation of graphene.

The researchers found that graphene made by them had a significant improvement in the electronic and optical properties of the transistor compared to the materials used in the manufacturing process in the past, and graphene more completely covered the substrate to form Better structure with fewer film defects.

Ravinder Dahiya, a professor of engineering at Glasgow University who led the study, said that the commercial price of the commercial copper foil we used in our process was about $ 1 per square meter, which is roughly equivalent to the current price of copper for graphene production 115 dollars. Moreover, this more expensive copper material typically has to be prepared before use, further adding to the cost of the manufacturing process.

The retail price of commercially available copper we use in the process is one dollar per square meter, compared to a similar amount used in the current $ 125 copper production of graphene. This more expensive form of copper usually requires preparation before it can be used, further adding to the cost of the process.

"Our process enables the production of high-quality graphene at low cost, enabling us to create new affordable electronic components even further, leading to a wider range of new applications, from smart cities to mobile health care."

A step by step approach to a wide range of applications to create affordable new electronic devices, smart city from the future to take us to mobile medical treatment.

"Most of my own research is in the field of synthetic skin.Graphite helps to provide a super soft and electrically conductive surface that can be used in patients with prosthetic ribs that can not be achieved with one of today's most advanced prostheses Provide sensory feedback. "

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Glasgow and Bilkent University in Turkey. The study's report, "Synthesis of Large Area Graphene for High Performance in Flexible Optoelectronic Devices," is published in the Science Report. The research was sponsored by the European Union and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
